The Humphrey and Lucy Chadbourne

Archaeology Dig 2003

Peter collects radar imaging on a posthole near Structure 2

From high-tech analysis to low-tech shovels, pails and screen, the 2003 dig had it all

The dig leader dazzled by the data on the screen

Peter explains the readings from his marvelous earth-penetrating radar equipment

Gordon, Tad and Kathy open up Structure 2 at the start of the week. Flags marked radar mapping and the archaeology grid

Earth-penetrating equipment allowed us to explore both above and below ground

Important rule: Don't trip over the cable during the data collection. Probes under the yellow cable tracked the elusive Chadbourne "palisade fence."

A busy day excavating Structure 2 by volunteers from Peabody, Mass. Boy Scouts, Saugus Iron Works, Berwick Academy, Mt, Holyoke College, and many more.

Last day of the dig. Tad had the crew open still more units in Structure 2 in preparation for further excavation in 2004.

Kathy poised for descent into Structure 2.

Lots of elbow grease at Structure 2

Tad shows visitors the Jesuit ring on the day of its discovery.

Sarah showed us the arrowhead she found.

Projectile point found by Sarah Baker - perhaps 1000 years old. It was just outside what we think is the front door of the main house.

Taking measurements in the leant-to part of the house.

Otis can't wait to see what Bruce finds next.

The dig seems more popular than ever for volunteers this year, who came from near and far.

Bob shows Tad some Portuguese ceramic that showed up out around Structure 2.

Exploring just outside the front door of the main house of the Chadbourne homestead.

Just outside the front door of the house lay foundation stones and the neatly arranged bricks of a collapsed 17th century chimney.

Wicked fun here, says Wicket.

Go to lab work from week two of the dig.
