Free Will Baptist Church, left, and the Sarah Orne Jewett House on Main Street in South Berwick village about 2002

From South Berwick village at the time of Jewett’s writing "The Old Town of Berwick" could likely be heard the bells of the Free Will Baptist Church, the Universalist Church, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Congregational Church (formerly First Church of Berwick), the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the First Baptist Church.

Large mills in South Berwick at that time included the Portsmouth Manufacturing Company, the Cummings Shoe Factory, and the Burleigh Woolen Mills at Great Works. The Salmon Falls Manufacturing Company produced cotton textiles nearby in Rollinsford, New Hampshire. There were also a number of smaller water powered mills such as Yeaton’s (gristmill) and McIntyre ‘s (lumber).
