An unfathomable Great Hole
An unfathomable Great Hole
". . . an unfathomable Great Hole, below the highest fall of water." Rushing water has worked its wonders on the landscape around South Berwick. There are a number of references to deep holes. Occasionally, one finds the Great Hole at Great Works being called Hobbs Hole. But Hobbs Hole is actually one of two depths on the Salmon Falls River, located near the Hamilton House. The other hole, also located near the Hamilton House, has been called Alpheus’ Hole or Deep Hole. Shipbuilding occurred near these watery depths, and became famous in local lore.
