The Haggens House, believed to have been built in 1774 by John Haggens, became the home of Sarah Orne Jewett’s grandfather, Theodore F. Jewett, during the 1820s. The author was born there in 1849 and lived in the house during the last decades of her life. She died there in 1909. Today it is a museum owned by Historic New England in the village of South Berwick.

The map below is an excerpt from the South Berwick village map in the York County Atlas of 1872, when the Jewett/Haggens House was occupied by Jewett’s uncle William Jewett, and the author lived next door with her parents in the house marked here "Dr. T. H. Jewett."--
