I can’t figure out where my ancestors are from in southern Maine. Kittery? Berwick? South Berwick? North Berwick?

It’s all very confusing.   I am looking for the birth and burial place of William Chadbourne (4) born in 1683, son of Humphrey (3),  son of Humphrey (2), son of William (1), who was baptised in England in 1582.  Can you help?

William Chadbourne (4)’s   birthplace has had several names over the centuries.  An explanation of the name changes of this place, South Berwick, may help in locating family sites and records here in this part of southern Maine.

Where did the name of South Berwick’s Witchtrot Road come from?

Rev. George Burroughs headstone at Salem, MAThe earliest mention of “Witchtrot” found so far is in an 1834 South Berwick deed.  A property on Old South Road is identified as being on the way to Witchtrot.  The legend of Witchtrot Road comes from local story telling, by generations of South Berwick folk.  The name is associated with the Salem witch trials and a minister from Wells named Rev. In 1692, three men burst into the dwelling house of Burroughs, then living in Wells with his wife and children.
